Oxfordshire Clean Rivers Debate

The Oxfordshire Clean Rivers Initiative, a coalition of prominent local environmental organizations and concerned citizens, is hosting the Oxfordshire Clean Rivers Debate at the historic Oxford Town Hall on Thursday, April 18th, from 6:30 to 9 pm.

As the local elections loom, we are inviting councillors from all political parties to share their perspectives on the sewage problem plaguing our rivers. This panel-style debate, reminiscent of ‘Question Time’, will provide a platform for elected representatives to articulate their party’s stance on this critical issue.

Thames Water’s failure to effectively manage sewage treatment services has put our rivers and environment at risk. Since privatization in 1989, the company has neglected infrastructure investment while channeling substantial profits to shareholders. Recent objections from the Environment Agency regarding new housing developments underscore the urgent need for action.

We would be delighted if you joined us to hear what your local Councillors intend to do about our rivers’ dire situation!

This event is open to the public. You are encouraged to submit questions to the Chair at the start of the meeting. Together, let’s explore solutions to safeguard our rivers and protect our environment for future generations.

The Oxfordshire Clean Rivers Initiative comprises a diverse coalition of organizations and individuals committed to environmental stewardship, including Earthwatch, Oxford Friends of the Earth, River Action, Windrush WASP, The Evenlode Catchment Partnership, Thames 21, Oxford University Students Union, and concerned local residents.
